My “office” is at Starbucks.  No, I’m not an employee, although I spend a lot of time there.  I stumbled on the idea of officing in a very public location when I moved to Merced, California in 2005 to plant or start a new church.

Church planters like me generally do not have a building they can access at any time or at which they can keep an office. So finding a place to hang their collective hats is important.  I like coffee, and Starbucks seemed a logical choice.

Before this venture, I had a private office in a traditional church building.  But now I share my space with college students, groups of men or women who share a common interest such as car restoration, young mothers looking for a change of location with a toddler in tow, and business people meeting a client.

If you come to my Starbucks, you’ll find me with my laptop or tablet, typing this week’s sermon, updating our church’s website, or writing an article.  The rarefied air of the coffee shop is a perfect place for conversing, planning, or writing.  This blog, MonoLogue, is equivalent to sitting down with me at my table and hearing what’s on my mind at the time.

I hope you enjoy MonoLogue.  More than that, I hope it will stimulate your mind and perhaps plant an idea that is interesting to think about.

By the way, I once went with my wife to San José where she was attending a conference.  I thought the hotel room would be a great place to get work done while she was at the conference.  I was wrong.  I had to find a Starbucks to get anything done.
